Shit I Bought and Liked: Sweatshirts in July?
HELLO my sweet shitters!
Thanks to some shoddy wifi/phone storage while I started writing this (halfway through a Friday AM flight to Vegas…), this newsletter was dangerously close to never seeing the light of day, but in a stroke of luck I was able to recover it! Great for me, and hopefully also for all of you! (Also, I think I love Vegas? And I definitely still love this insanely flattering Ref set, which I will continue to wear from Italian summers to nightclubs and everywhere in between.)
For today’s newsletter I felt like getting back to my roots a bit! Instead of a roundup like I’ve been doing lately, I wanted to focus on one thing I bought recently that I’ve really been loving. The only catch is that that one thing is not exactly seasonally appropriate…
I know a sweatshirt in July (especially a July as disastrously hot as this one) is a crazy suggestion, but in the two months since I added this Essentials pullover to my closet, it’s very quickly become one of my go-to lounge pieces, and I didn’t want to risk it selling it out before I could share. (July also means it’s on sale for around $50, so it’s actually a very solid purchase this time of year!)
I’ve recommended Essentials before—I got one of their tonal crewnecks for my boyfriend as part of his Christmas gift and he’s since added another to his closet—but this one is for me!
Obviously they’re soft and cozy, as any go-to sweatshirt needs to be. But the mock neck adds a little something cool and different to the style. (As someone who gets cold easily but almost never wears a scarf, I anticipate this being a very helpful design element in the fall/winter months too.) As of now, I mostly wear it over leggings or bike shorts on my way to a workout or while lounging/on nighttime walks, but I’d also bring it along for a chillier beach day/night or on a plane.
The unisex sizing means that anyone can really wear it depending on their style preferences. I can imagine my boyfriend wearing this with jeans in the fall or winter, and because I knew I wanted it oversized, we can actually share! I originally got a medium, which is oversized on me, but it did shrink a bit in the dryer, so I could’ve gone with a large as well. I’m partial to this classic colorway (this is the one I have myself—it’s sold out on sale, but it’s super versatile, so to me it’d be worth it even at full price), but I also love this and this as well. And if the funnel neck isn’t your thing, you know I’m a fan of their crews (available here in plenty of colors).
Other things I’ve been loving lately: Pickleball! Blackjack. Karin Slaughter (whose endless supply of thrillers got me back into the habit of daily reading after a very long rut). Rainier cherries. These Khaite sandals that I found on TheRealReal for a fraction of the price. My current go-to lip liner. This better for you mac & cheese, aka my new lazy meal. Window shopping in person at Bergdorf Goodman, which is simply the best shopping experience in the entire world. And of course, my amazing friends, which usually goes without saying, but deserve a shoutout today 💕
Good luck to everyone powering through the week ahead. Paid subscribers are getting the August edition of On My Eye later this week—if you want to join them, you already know what to do!
xo,
